by Arron MacDonaldCoach MacDonald zooms-in on how players can be deliberate in ensuring they're developing every session. Pre-practice has become something of a buzzword in the coaching community over the past few years. If you're not sure what I'm talking about... "pre-practice"refers to the window of time when the players are in the gym, but before practice has officially commenced. In a lot of gyms you'll see players playing 1v1 or small-sided games, while others will be casting up threes or working on trick-shots... and inevitably someone is out there pounding the rock, working on their handles. Most players and teams have a pre-game routine - a series of drills they work through to get ready to perform at their highest level. This is something which has been popularised even further with Steph Curry's pre-game shooting routines (this youtube video alone has over two million views!). However, while many players can be seen doing a (bad) Steph Curry impression before training, very few seem to have a developmental pre-practice routine. By being intentional in what we do before training sessions, it will help to put you in a positive, developmental mindframe - knowing that you've already "gotten better" before the session starts. This will help you to get the most out of the training session itself, and to improve as much as possible throughout the course of the season. Most coaches out there will be saying to "start with form shooting", and I'm not about to disagree with them! Building muscle memory, focus and your shooting form is a great thing to do when you first walk into the gym. From there, there's any number of pre-practice drills which can be used to work on your shooting, ball-handling or footwork in a really limited time - and we've collected six of our favourites together in our Pre-Practice Drillbook, which is available FREE for anyone who subscribes to our mailing list (along with a 10% discount for our store). So subscribe below, and if you'd like to book a ONE2ONE BASKETBALL coach to work on your handling, footwork, finishing (or anything else!), then please get in touch! By Tom SadlerIntroducing our latest coaching additions... ONE2ONE BASKETBALL are delighted to announce the addition of Coaches Cat Lutz, Arron MacDonald and Dan Ashby to the ONE2ONE Basketball Family!
Cat Lutz is a professional basketball player and former NCAA Division I athlete who is currently completing a PhD in sport psychology. She brings a wealth of basketball and mental performance knowledge to the team, with a focus on training players and coaches basketball skill development as well as optimal performance mental tools. Dan Ashby is a Level 3 qualified personal trainer who has played and coached in both the EABL and the National League. His main goal is to help individuals accomplish their personal fitness goals and help athletes reach their to physical level. Arron MacDonald is an established coach at local and national league level. With Arron's experience of balancing his basketball with a career in people management and having a young family at home, we've tasked him to work on a few different projects - including building and maintaining our online coaching resources. Coach MacDonald had this to say on the coaching curriculum projects: “You don’t always have time to research new drills or create session plans every week, and it’s all too easy to fall back on the same few drills. That’s why I’m so excited to be working in this role with ONE2ONE BASKETBALL – as in addition to helping players to become more skilled, better team-mates and better leaders, I also get to focus on content creation, giving coaches everywhere access to the drills and sessions that we use to work with our players, at a reasonable price, and giving players who aren’t able to get to Colchester to work with our coaches – or who can’t afford coaches for individual workouts – the ability to purchase those workouts and still work on improving their game in-line with our methods of developing players.” We’ll be releasing the new content over the coming weeks and months – so check back regularly! Director Tom Sadler said: “These three coaches really help us to offer our players something different, and will allow us to help players, teams and coaches to develop in different ways. All three are real students of the game, and their knowledge, work ethic and coaching ability means they're going to be a great fit for us at ONE2ONE BASKETBALL, and I'm excited to work alongside them.” To make sure you don’t miss anything, be sure to follow us on twitter and instagram – and don’t forget, if you sign up for our mailing list you’ll receive a free pre-practice drillbook, with half a dozen drills you can do before any training session to work on footwork, ball-handling and finishing. By Tom SadlerOur Director reintroduces you to ONE2ONE Basketball For me there are certain disciplines and sacrifices that come with loving the sport you play. If you really love it, then no one will ever have to wake you up in the morning, and no one will ever have to question your work ethic or if you work out at all. It’s about the extra workouts, when coaches and trainers aren’t around. It’s about wanting to get better when no one is around and on your case to go that extra mile. Are you willing to put in work outside of your team training sessions and beyond what you’re expected to do? I think for most people, the desire to be great is there but the problems and blocks they face may be with not knowing how to truly make the best of their time when at the basketball court; or they're unsure about what exercises they should be doing to help them get stronger, faster, or jumping higher. That's why I started ONE2ONE Basketball, and have put together a team of like-minded coaches to help players with aspirations of playing at a higher level. Our team of experts are available to help guide and develop your game, body and mind to #BoostYourBackpack and give you that competitive edge, but remember... NOTHING WORKS UNLESS YOU DO. If you'd like to book a workout with a ONE2ONE Basketball Coach, get in touch and don't forget to follow us on twitter and instagram. Over the next few days and weeks, we'll be letting you know more about our new team members, and the work our team has put in to help support coaches to grow and develop in the game that we love, as well as our partnership with Starting 5 to bring you some amazing basketball apparel. So please, stay posted... there's plenty more to come from us! |
